Phototherapy and Bio-electromagnetic Therapy in Pain

Acute pain which is inadequately treated frequently leads to chronic pain.  A growing body of science and clinical experience suggests that energy-based treatments, including low intensity lasers, LED phototherapy and electromagnetic field therapy, when applied at the outset of injury, may prevent many, perhaps most, acute painful conditions from ever becoming chronic.

What might be the health and financial benefits for all Americans and for the economy as a whole if these treatments were broadly implemented, widely available and reimbursed by insurance?

Chronic Pain is the Leading Cause of Disability

Chronic pain affects more than one out of three U.S. citizens (>100 million of us).  Direct costs (including over the counter and prescription drugs, missed workdays and the like)  have been estimated at $100 billion[1].   Yet this vastly underestimates the true financial burden, pain and suffering for the individuals directly affected and the costs and stress on our economy and the nation as a whole.  Chronic pain is the chief cause of disability.  Taking care of the disabled is enormously expensive.

The #1 cause of disability is “arthritis or rheumatism” = 8.6 million people.
The #2 cause of disability is “back or spine problems” = 7.6 million people.
.                                                                  =16.2 million people

Can we do better?

The best treatments for pain would be those which address the underlying causes, are safe and affordable.  Low intensity lasers  and bio-electromagnetic therapy regenerate tissue and have been reported to improve the underlying pathology in the #1 and #2 causes of disability.

Therapies documented to heal damaged tissue and improve physiological function are also likely to have an endpoint.  As such, they hold great promise to improve the way we care for one another – while also lowering costs.  In contrast, “managing” chronic pain endlessly by prescription or over the counter medications may do little to address the underlying disease process or to improve health, and it is hugely expensive.

How much pain, suffering and money will be spared with the implementation of laser and bioelectromagnetic therapies as first line treatments for pain?
