Bioelectromagnetic Therapy

Magnetism is one of the universe's fundamental powers.  It has been used medicinally for thousands of years.  With the advent of electricity and electromagnetics, our ability to produce and control electromagnetic fields and to use them to diagnose and treat has expanded enormously.

Bioelectromagnetic Therapy is the application of electromagnetic fields to treat and promote health.  Although this therapy may be new to most of us in North America, it has been studied systematically throughout eastern Europe and in the countries of the former Soviet Union for over 35 years.  Thousands of studies have been performed, and its use is part of standard practice there for many conditions.

How important is Bioelectromagnetic Therapy?  In 1992 Dr. Andrew Bassett, who helped pioneer the first FDA approved device using pulsed electromagnetic fields, wrote,
"In the decade to come bioelectromagnetics will assume a therapeutic importance equal to, or greater than, that of pharmacology and surgery today. With proper interdisciplinary effort, significant inroads can be made in controlling the ravages of cancer, some forms of heart disease, arthritis, hormonal disorders, and neurological scourges such as Alzheimer' s disease, spinal cord injury, and multiple sclerosis."1

Besides addressing specific conditions, many health promoting benefits have been reported, including increased energy and availability of oxygen, enhanced transport of ions (calcium, potassium, sodium) and other molecules across cell membranes, improved circulation, superior healing, better sleep, pain relief and stress reduction.  There is speculation that regular, appropriate bioelectromagnetic treatment may increase longevity and quality of life.

Magnetic fields pass through the body almost as if it were transparent, inducing electrical currents, and these may account for many of the far-reaching and systemic effects observed.    Because the body is essentially transparent to magnetic fields, they may also provide the ideal means to deliver to a pulsed signal to elicit a systemic response.

Bioelectromagnetic and laser therapies are frequently combined in research and in the clinic.  By adding energy to living systems, these modern energy therapies may serve to enhance the effects of acupuncture and other traditional methods.
